  This novel is
one of the many forgotten Penguin crime novels. Not really a crime novel, though, because it deals with the planning and
justification of a crime which is never committed, and the complicity of the narrator despite his ignorance of the
planned crime. The five roundabouts to heaven are the roundabouts that Philip Bartels passes through on the route to his
girlfriend’s house, though as the climax approaches he wonders if they are the five roundabouts to hell. He
desires to be free of his wife, and because he has an aversion to inflicting pain, he reasons himself into planning her
murder rather than her abandonment. And this is the crime that is planned throughout the novel.
  
  This
planned crime is the justification for the novel, but seems incidental to it. The book is really a study of the way
people think and their motives for action or inaction. And how someone will quite willingly believe arguments that
support actions they want to take. And how a set of logically reasoned steps can lead to an illogical conclusion. This
aspect of the book is interesting and insightful, though perhaps a little obvious, but the surprise ending can be
spotted a mile off, and the book drags as it approaches the end.
  
  
  
  Tim Brett is a former drug addict who has
written a book about his experience and has been published. He has been clean for about a year. He had recently become
acquainted with his aunt, a philanthropist who expresses interest in helping some of Tim's former acquaintances. She is
found murdered soon after. Tim starts a relationship with Juliet, the woman who found his aunt's body, and they are soon
engaged. Dissatisfied with the progress that the police are making in his aunt's murder case, he begins to ask questions
of some of his aunt's acquaintances. He then begins to receive warnings from unknown persons to stop his inquiries. He
meets an elderly woman on the train. She hands him a note of supposed comfort, asking him to read it at home. The note
turns out to be a warning about leaving matters to the police, apparently typed on his own typewriter. There's also an
ominous laugh recorded on Tim's own tape recorder, indicating that someone had been in his apartment. Tim is then
visited by a police sergeant, Sgt. Matthews, who informs him that the woman on the train had lodged a complaint against
Tim. Sgt. Matthews takes Tim's information but after the woman is also killed, Tim finds out that there is no sergeant
by that name working at the police station. Tim is later assaulted on the streets at night by two men who leave him
lying on the ground with a hypodermic needle. Tim throws the needle away down a gutter. He makes contact with a secret
government agency which tells him that they are after the people who are threatening him, but all is - again - not what
it seems to be. As the situation continues, Tim and Juliet's wedding fast approaches.

  Michael Sibley and John Prosset shared a history
that dated back to their first years at boarding school, and so the news of Prosset's murder came as a great shock to
his old friend -- especially because Sibley had been staying only the day before at Prosset's country house, where the
body was found.
  
  When the police arrive to question him in connection with the murder, Sibley finds
himself lying about his recent visit, and thus begins to reveal the true nature of a longstanding but volatile
friendship, fraught with mutual deception and distrust. As he tells his version of the truth to the police - and to the
reader - Sibley makes the first of many fateful mistakes and finds himself not only under suspicion, but a primary
suspect in the investigation.
  
  Seen through the eyes of Sibley himself, 'My Name Is Michael Sibley' is a
mesmerizing account of murder, as the narrator purposefully attempts to elude the police and prove his innocence to the
reader in the same breath.(less)
